Research in service of better decisions.

We do field research for private, public, and social sector organizations whose decisions depend on understanding people.

We spend time with people where their lives actually happen. We interview them in their homes and workplaces, watch how products and services get used in practice, and pay attention to the gap between what people say and what they do. Then we help you use those insights to navigate the decision in front of you.

Every strategy rests on a picture of the people it serves.

Behind every plan is a set of beliefs about people. What residents want. Why families choose one program over another. What a customer is really paying for. That picture usually gets drawn from inside the organization, assembled from surveys, dashboards, and the view from the meeting room.

The trouble is not the data, but the distance. The further your vantage point is from where people actually live and work, the more your strategy runs on assumption.

When the inside perspective matters most.

01

You’re designing something new.

A program, service, or product will succeed or fail on how well it fits real life, and a needs assessment only describes the surface. We use jobs-to-be-done and related methods to understand what people are actually trying to accomplish, so you can design for real life.

02

Your stakeholders don’t agree.

Work stalls when the room holds several competing definitions of success. Thick, qualitative data makes these assumptions explicit, resulting in collaboration toward a shared vision instead of everyone defending a position.

03

Your strategy rests on untested assumptions.

Before committing budget and years to a plan, it's worth finding out whether the beliefs about people underneath it hold up. We test the load-bearing assumptions in the field, early, while changing course is still cheap.

04

You want the people you serve at the table.

Co-design is easy to promise and hard to structure. We design and facilitate processes where community members and constituents genuinely shape the outcome, with their participation grounded in research rather than staged for the photo.

Engagements are scoped to the decision at hand, from a few weeks of focused fieldwork to a season of embedded research alongside your team. Every project ends in findings built for use: clear enough for a board, specific enough for the people doing the work.

If your next decision depends on understanding people, start with the real picture.
